DAY TOURS

Our tour of this bustling metropolis, often called the cultural 'melting pot' of South Africa, includes a drive through the Marine Parade (Golden Mile) where you will see the rickshaws. We drive past the busiest harbour in Africa and various historical monuments, and then through the city centre where the second railway station, the City Hall and the Post Office buildings each have a story to tell. We stop at the Indian Market where you get a glimpse into the Indian culture and bargain for souvenirs and spices. Our last visit is to the Botanical Gardens with its extensive collection of trees and plants from all over the world, as well as a famous cycad collection and orchid garden.

2)   WILDLIFE AND ZULU CULTURE

Depart Durban westwards into the bushveld for a open vehicle safari at a Private Game Reserve that boasts wildlife such as rhino, buffalo, giraffe, zebra, wildebeest, hippo, and a wide variety of antelope. This is followed by lunch. Depart for the impressive Valley of a 1000 Hills where we introduce you to the age-old Zulu tradition. Visit the Sangoma and enjoy the Zulu dancing and cultural demonstrations. We also visit a crocodile farm and snake park before returning to Durban.

3) DRAKENSBERG MOUNTAINS – LESOTHO

Drive inland to Pietermaritzburg, the capital of KwaZulu-Natal, Continue through an area of gentle pastoral beauty called the Natal Midlands. We pass through grassy plains scattered with villages and lush farmlands where plump cattle and thoroughbred horses graze. Then further through Underberg, a picturesque little village situated in the foothills of the majestic Drakensberg Mountains. Then we set off to Sani Pass, named after the primitive people who lived in the area millennia ago, on a four-wheel drive with hair raising bends and breathtaking views to the top of the mountain. Lunch is served at the top in the Mountain Kingdom of Lesotho some 3000m above sea level. We return early afternoon, change vehicles and return to Durban.

 5)   UMGENI VALLEY PROJECT/SHARE-NET and HOWICK  TOUR

Depart Durban into the direction of Pietermaritzburg towards Howick. Time permitting we take a short visit to the Howick Falls. We then head to the Umgeni Valley Nature Reserve which  is a scenic destination that has provided a home for environmental education processes for the past forty years.  The centre has recently been accredited as a United Nations University, Regional Centre of Expertise.

This tour involves environmental education, low-cost publishing and materials development, accredited training and the SADC-REEP a regional environmental education programme.After a light lunch here  we head  through to the “Dovehouse” which is a permaculture centre for a tour and walk around here with the owner. We head back to Durban after a tea break at the Assegaai coffee shop (included)

6) THE GREAT WILDIFE EXPEDITION - 6 Days (6 - 11 Nov)

KwaZulu-Natal, Swaziland, Kruger National Park, Panoramic Route

We drive north towards the subtropical coast and bushveld of Zululand - home of the mighty Zulu nation and visit the village of St Lucia for a boat cruise on the estuary of the famous lake St Lucia (proclaimed a World Heritage Site in December 1999). Crocodiles, hippos and wildlife including birds such as the fish eagle are in abundance. From here we travel to the Hluhluwe-Umfolozi Park, where the rhino was saved from extinction and home to the shy nyala and the Big Five. After checking in at the Hilltop Camp where we overnight, depart on a later afternoon / early evening game drive in an open safari vehicle equipped with powerful spotlights to search for the elusive nocturnal and other animals. Dinner is served after completion of the drive. Overnight Hilltop Camp in Chalet type en-suite rooms. Dinner included.

Day 2
Hluhluwe Imfolozi Park - Swaziland

After an early breakfast we do a last drive in search of game through this magnificent reserve before we head northwards and continue to Swaziland. We pass Big Bend, the country's largest sugar plantations en route to Manzini, the industrial centre of Swaziland. We drive past the Independence Stadium and Parliament Buildings in the Ezulwini Valley and visit the well-known local craft market where bargaining is the order of the day.  Our next stop is Swazi Candles, where the locals hand-mould wax into a wide variety of colourful candles.
Overnight at Foresters Arms Hotel, situated in the mountains. Breakfast and dinner included.

Day 3
Swaziland – Kruger National Park

Today we travel through the capital of Swaziland, Mbabane, and visit the Ngwenya Glass factory further on, where all products are hand made from recycled glass. We continue through magnificent mountain scenery via Piggs Peak and leave Swaziland entering the Kruger National Park in the south. The rest of the day is devoted to game viewing. We overnight in chalets in a rest camp within the park.

Day 4
Kruger National Park

Today is completely devoted to game viewing as we search for the 'Big Five' amongst other animals. Join a sunset open vehicle safari and a bush dinner afterwards. Overnight Skukuza Camp. Breakfast and dinner included.

Day 5
Kruger
National Park
- Panoramic Route
After an early morning hike, searching for the wild on foot with an armed ranger, and breakfast we depart from this paradise.  We enter the escarpment of
Mpumalanga via Abel Erasmus Pass. We stop at the Three Rondavels view site of the Blyde River Canyon and walk along the steep cliffs to enjoy a better view of the magnificent scenery. The next stop is Bourke's Luck Potholes. A hike down the hill to view this unique trick of nature is worth the effort. Visits to Lisbon Falls, God’s Window and the Pinnacle are rewarding experiences. Continue via Graskop to Sabie where we overnight. Overnight Lone Creek River Lodge. Breakfast and dinner included today.

Day 6
Panoramic Route - Johannesburg
After breakfast we do a pleasant walk through indigenous forest to visit Lone Creek Falls. At MacMac Falls, another walk takes you to the spot where the rush for alluvial gold started in 1873. Our “gold rush” culminates with a visit to Pilgrim’s Rest, a fine example of a gold mining town initially built in the 19th Century. Stroll through the town and experience this little town that is now a national monument.  Afterwards, we continue via Robber’s Pass, Lydenburg and Dullstroom to Johannesburg, where we arrive late afternoon.

CAPE TOWN PRE-CONFERENCE TOUR - 5 days (28 Oct - 1 Nov)

Arrival Cape Town, Optional City Tour

On your arrival you are met at the airport and transferred to your hotel.
This afternoon you can join an optional tour of Cape Town, Tavern of the Seas, with the majestic Table Mountain as a backdrop, is one of the most beautiful cities in the world. An electric mix of architectural styles, cobble stone streets and cultural diversity enhance the cosmopolitan ambience. Some of the highlights we visit are Signal Hill, Malay Quarters, Castle of Good Hope, Company Gardens and Government Avenue before returning to your hotel.

Cape Peninsula & Seal Island Boat Ride

The Cape Peninsula forms part of the Cape Floral Kingdom, and more indigenous plant species per square meter are found here than anywhere else on earth. On this round-trip of the Peninsula, we visit the following highlights: Cape Point where the two oceans meet, the fynbos rich Cape of Good Hope Nature Reserve, a boat trip to Seal Island, a visit to Boulders Beach where we can see penguins in their natural habitat, Muizenberg with its magnificent 35 km stretch of beaches and Simon's Town where the South African Navy is based. We return to the city late afternoon after an eventful day.

Day 3 – depart 09h00
Kirstenbosch Botanical Gardens & Wine Tasting

The morning will begin with an orientation to the Environmental Education Centre and the scope of its programmes. Thereafter, participants will become the learners and experience, first hand, a 3-hour curriculum-linked Grade 10 Biome lesson, during which you will visit indigenous forest, succulent and Fynbos areas of the garden. As well as studying biophysical components of these three biomes, the values and pressures on them will be discussed. Fynbos will warrant extra attention, and energy transfers within the ecosystem will be demonstrated in an innovative way. You will return to the EE Centre at about 12h30 for a cup of tea and a post-lesson discussion.  Then travel to Groot Constantia the oldest winemaking centre in South Africa for lunch and tasting of some great South African wines. Return to the hotel late afternoon.

Day 4 – depart 08h30
Karro & Harold Porter Botanical Gardens Tour

We depart from Cape Town around 08h30 and drive along the N1 through the Huguenot tunnel to Worcester for a visit to the Karoo Desert National Botanical Garden. This garden’s uniqueness lies in the fact that it is the only truly succulent garden in the southern hemisphere and on the African continent. One of the floral highlights of the year is spring, when thousands of annuals and brightly coloured vygies come into flower. This colour spectacle lasts from mid-August to the end of September. We enjoy an early lunch in the restaurant set in tranquil surrounds in the garden over looking the Hex River Mountains – named after the kokerboom. Then we travel via Villiersdorp and the Theewaterskloof Dam through scenic mountainous landscape to the Harold Porter Botanical Garden. This beautiful, secluded garden is set between mountain and sea, in the heart of the Cape fynbos region and encompasses 10 hectares of cultivated fynbos garden and 190.5 hectares of pristine natural fynbos. Situated in the centre of the coastal fynbos where the flora is at its richest, the garden encompasses mountain slopes with their wind-clipped heath lands, deep gorges with relict forests, flats and marshes with restios, sedges and bulbs, as well as dunes adjacent to the beach with their specialised salt-adapted plants. The garden is renowned for its waterfalls and amber pools. The main fynbos families (proteas, ericas and restios) are present as well as other important families such as irises, daisies and orchids. The garden boasts Disa uniflora in its natural habitat (flowering from mid-December to end of January) as well as the national flower, the king protea. After an eventful day we return to Cape Town via the scenic coastal route.

St. Lucia and Hluhluwe Game Reserve

Full Day Tour
Driving north, we proceed to the Hluhluwe/Imfolozi Game Reserve, home of the Big Five. We change vehicles and do an open vehicle game drive through the reserve. We then head South to the Greater St Lucia Wetland Park - one of South Africa’s World Heritage Sites. Here, the cruise of a lifetime awaits along Africa’s largest estuary, teeming with some 800 hippos and 1500 Nile crocodiles surveyed by majestic Fish Eagles and Palm Nut Vultures. We will be served a LIGHT FINGER SNACK LUNCH on board the boat. Thereafter it’s back to Durban, where the sun never sets.

Wildlife and Cultural Highlights - 3 days (6 Nov - 8 Nov)

Day 1 – depart 08h30
Durban – Zulu Cultural Village – Hluhluwe Imfolozi Park

We travel north through sugar cane fields, eucalyptus plantations, and past titanium mining operations towards the subtropical coast and bushveld of Zululand. We visit a Zulu village for a cultural experience. We visit the Sangoma (a diviner also erroneously called the 'Witch doctor') and treated to some authentic tribal dancing. After lunch we depart for the “Big Five” Hluhluwe-Umfolozi Park where our close encounter with the African wildlife begins. We reach Hilltop Camp - Overnight in the chalet type accommodation. Dinner included.

Day 2
Hluhluwe Imfolozi Park

An early morning rise to join an open vehicle safari in search of the animals and return for breakfast. The rest of the day we spend the day game viewing through the reserve in our vehicle with your guide. Return late afternoon to the camp for an early dinner before departing in an open vehicle on a night safari using powerful spotlights to find the elusive nocturnal animals.  Return late evening after an unforgettable experience.  Hilltop Camp. Breakfast and dinner included.

Day 3
Hluhluwe Infolozi Park – St Lucia - Durban

After an early breakfast we have a last exciting game drive before we leave the reserve for a boat cruise on the famous Lake St Lucia (proclaimed a World Heritage Site in December 1999), a natural paradise around which five complete ecosystems exist with an abundance of bird life, hippo and crocodiles. After this experience we return to Durban where we arrive late afternoon. Breakfast included.
